No prior bellydance experience is necessary for this class. Students will learn movements that will prepare their bodies for labor and delivery, while helping them retain a positive body image throughout their pregnancy!
The movement of bellydance helps to improve abdominal control and awareness, as well as strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor, which is important for birth as well as post-natal recovery. Many of the movements have been traditionally used to move the baby into the best position or relieve discomfort of labor, promote better circulation, prevent excessive weight gain and to relieve discomfort of pregnancy.
This class is designed to build strength, stamina and muscle tone for expectant and new mothers. By following the warm-ups, exercises and cool-downs each student will learn the benefits of stretching and exercise. Students will learn to relax and breath, as well as learn what movements should be avoided during pregnancy. There are also exercises for labor taught in the course!
Each class will conclude by viewing a short video showing one or more of the following: interviews with bellydance mothers about their journeys with bellydance and childbirth, interviews with professional mid wives and doctors, as well as several bellydance performances of pregnant dancers. This extra bonus at the end of each class will help you leave feeling encouraged and excited!
It is not necessary to be currently pregnant to take this class. It is beneficial for mothers-to-be and new mothers alike. Each 6 week session will be slightly different, but they do not build on each other. This will ensure that each student can maximize the benefits of the dance form during pregnancy and continue a gentle exercise program during this exciting time in her life. Remember, each body type and each pregnancy is different. Each student must consult their doctor regarding this exercise program and if this course is for them.
