When Alyssa opened up her dance studio, she wanted to find a way to give back to the community through a charity.  Having always been an animal lover, Alyssa wanted to choose a local animal shelter.  She chose Animal Protection and Education Association, Inc. (APEA), because it is a relatively unknown shelter in dire need of assistance.

APEA, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, is a no-kill shelter whose mission is to promote the humane treatment of all animals, eliminate pet overpopulation, provide public education regarding animal care and welfare, protect the animals placed in our care, and to seek responsible homes for the animals that can be adopted.   APEA relies on private donations and receives no public assistance.

APEA recently acquired all of the animals from another local shelter after they had to shut their doors due to unforeseen circumstances.  Since then, APEA has been struggling for financial assistance, volunteers and food donations.

Alyssa held the Holiday Hafla in December of 2009 to benefit APEA.  Through the sale of raffle tickets for over $2000 in prizes donated by local businesses and fellow animal lovers, Alyssa was able to raise $428 and to collect several large boxes of food, toys, treats, etc. that was donated by attendees of the hafla.  Alyssa brought the check and boxes of donations to the APEA shelter and was further inspired to help after seeing all of the animals waiting for homes.

Gulf Coast Bellydance wanted to help bring APEA further into the public eye and recently donated website design and maintenance to APEA for two years.  The APEA website went online in January of 2010.  Please consider adopting, fostering or donating to APEA through their website.
